ROCK ME AMADEUS
the scene: backstage Filhas de Gaia, Fashion Rio
Some of those autumn trends literally are hair raising. Volume is back in a way not seen since the heydays of Rock Me Amadeus and Alexis Carrington. Grab as much hairspray as you can and expect to spend half of your day emptying its content on your scalp. Considering the other major autumnal trend is swine flu which will force us to stay home most of the time anyway, this is a brilliant way to kill time.

The other advantage of supersize-hair is it optically slims the rest of your body down. Which will allow us to spend the other half of the day with cake fights, like good old Marie Antoinette.

STATEMENT BODY
the scene:backstage Alessa, Fashion Rio
Is it a swimsuit, is it body statement jewellery, can it be worn on the red carpet, will it boogie with Gaga or is it plain Dada? All I know is: if you intend to va-va voom from beach to party and back without costume change this is your ultimative summer investment buy.

BOMBSHELL BIKINI
the scene:backstage Cantao, Fashion Rio
I don’t know about you, but when temperatures reach beyond 30 C my mind goes completely blank and all I can think of is a swim in the pool, or better, in the ocean, shocking the waves into submission in a bombshell bikini.

THE CARIOCA ELEMENT
the scene: backstage Lenny, Fashion Rio, SS10
Swimwear is where Fashion Rio really glitters and sparkles. Whilst everywhere else local labels still tend to borrow heavily from European fashion, in the bikini department Cariocas simply outshine the rest of the world.
It is therefore save to say Lenny Niemeyer designs just about the hottest swimwear in the world. Her creations certainly make the stuff we get in Europe look rather drab. This season’s highlights included various takes on the number Milla Jovovich wore in The Fifth Element. And there were a few designs which appeared to be based on The Flintstones in Ipanema which stood out in a weird but cool way.
Lenny’s signature sexiness is achieved with exuberant colours, clever pleating, architectural cuts, and the latest lazer technique. Best thing is, the use of high-tech fabrics like lurex with integrated UVB/colour-protection means the swimsuits will last longer than a dip in the infinity pool.
Lenny is also famous for throwing Fashion Rio’s most lavish party at her apartment, drinks til the morning hours etc.. But unfortunately not this season. Another reason to come back.

ADDICTED TO MODERNIST LIPS
the scene:: backstage Acquastudio, Fashion Rio SS10
I had two déja-vus. First, a Hussein Chalayan and second a Robert Palmer one. And that’s most definitely worth an afterthought or two.

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW
the scene: backstage Maria Bonito Extra, Rio de Janeiro
Maria Bonita Extra took us on a trip over the rainbow with a troupe of Brazilian Dorothies who stormed the Land of Oz in signature neon tartan, hearts and bows, accessorized with short and sharply-tailored dresses. Bold prints clashed cutely with faux pannier elements and rainbow-coloured organza. The collection was the perfect welcome drink to Fashion Rio, tasting of confidence, youth and playful seductiveness. Can I have another shot, please?
