PLAYWATCH-KOLUMNE: RADIKALE FRISCHZELLENKUR
Am Sonntag erschien das Playwatch-Spezial zum Swiss Textiles Award. Darin rate ich der Modebranche zur radikalen Frischzellenkur. Jetzt und sofort.
(in plain English: On Sunday, my latest Playwatch column appeared in Swiss Sunday paper ‘SonntagsZeitung’. I looked around this year’s Swiss Textiles Award. Faced with the rather geriatric face of fashion business, I felt this: get a radical facelift. Now!)

THIS TRAM IS NOT A TRAMP
I did not think it possible by any stretch of the imagination but here we go. Thursday night, I ended up sharing a ride on tram number 13 with Jason Campbell of JCReport. Quite possibly the most glam moment for Zurich public transport ever. Next time, we shall do the Fondue tram.

Earlier on, I caught Jason chatting to Alexis Mabille who was looking forward to a fashion date with Dasha.

AMERICAN HOME RUN
I might be wrong, but I do believe most of us are still happy to spend our hard-earned money on a designer piece. But I do believe the days when designer labels got away with selling us overpriced luxury made in China are over. Likewise, we don’t necessarily buy into a designer’s vision anymore if it’s impossible to translate into our real lives. And why can’t we order that rare piece online?
All we expect from designer fashion today really is: fit our personal style, add that little extra, it can cost, but not the world. We want something we can wear to work, take out to the club, dance through the night and catch the bus home with, if need be.
Alexander Wang is a designer who understands this need for down-to-earth glam with a bit of Brooklyn edginess thrown in perfectly well. Best of all, his business philosophy is you pay for what you get not for the hype. Price tags are very moderate, and, yes, he sells online too.
Which makes him a very deserved winner of Swiss Textiles Award 2009.
For his Spring 2010 collection, Wang took American classics like the sweatshirt, the motorcycle leather jacket and football wear, then threw in plenty of red carpet dress sex-appeal. As the pictures prove, this really is glamour you can run in:

SWISS TEXTILES AWARD: FIRST LOOK
Hello from Swiss Textiles Award in Zurich. Let’s take a first look at the nominated collections. This year, they really do cover the entire spectrum from fierce futurist to radical urban romantic. The jury is spoilt for choice. That’s good news. As long as there is choice fashion is alive and kicking.

Alexis Mabille (France)

PLAY AT SWISS TEXTILES AWARD 09
I’m very happy to announce I’ll again be covering Swiss Textiles Award from fitting to catwalk to after party.
Now, who is going to win the Oscar of the fashion industry: Erdem, Alexis Mabille, Ohne Titel, Thakoon Panichgul, Peter Pilotto or Alexander Wang?
As usual, the winner of last year’s event will also present their latest collection on the runway. I’m very thrilled indeed to see Rodarte’s much fêted SS10 collection
Celebrating their 10th anniversary on November 12 Swiss Textiles Award have invited past winners for a star studded panel discussion. The jubilee session will star: Rodarte, Marios Schwab, Bruno Pieters, Christian Wijnants, Haider Ackermann, Raf Simons, Benoît Missolin, Tran Hin Phu (CH), and Daniel Herman (CH). Fashion business journalist and consultant Robb Young will chair the panel. He will be joined by Dana Thomas, author of Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Lustre and Mathias Ohrel who headhunts chief designers and executives for the world’s leading luxury labels.
Oh, before you splash all your money on Jimmy Choo for H&M: You’ll be able to purchase select pieces from all the nominated designers at GLOBUS department store, Nov 12 through to Nov 28 (Bahnhofstrasse flagship store only).
Wow, so much fashion glamour, glitter and sparkle, it’s better than Christmas.

STA 08: RUN THIS WAY
the scene: backstage Swiss Textile Award runway show
“Why are all the photographers snapping the same things,” an aide commented, as the backstage snappers were firing off their flashes at the Amy Winehouse of the night’s fetish shoe scene, Rodarte’s gold chain platform number. The guy had a point. It dawned to me, all tomorrows backstage pics would look the same. There’s only so much space, clothes and models. It was time to go elsewhere to find exclusive pictures. Ironically, I was actually forced to sniff around a little, because my Bottega Veneta clutch had been knicked in the vip-lounge. The bad news is, I didn’t find my beloved bag(and mobile). The good news is, in the long dark corridors I happened to stumble upon fully made-up models in bathrobes, sprinting frantically between make-up hq and backstage. Bingo, models on the run, the paparazzi classic. Enjoy.

STA 08: AND THE WINNER IS…
the scene: Swiss Textile Award Show
And the winner of the fashion industry’s Oskar, is…predictably but fully deservedly…RODARTE! Let’s all rise for a standing ovation for the weird and wonderful imagination of Laura & Kate Mulleavy. Their textile tales of gothic horrors are fit for modern fairytale princesses with a penchant for fetish shoes, secretly dreaming of a pillow fight with Edward Scissorhands. Who says dark times don’t come with happy endings?

ps: if you’re Swiss don’t miss the Rodarte feature on tonight’s 10vor10 newsshow on SF1 which you might follow up with Once Upon A Time In The Wild West on SF2 for dessert.

STA 08: GETTING DRESSED
the scene: Stella 08
I am back from the dress rehearsal, everything runs smoothly despite a tiny tiny backstage/fitting area. I don’t know how it can work but it does so everything will be all right tonight. See you later.
