WHAT’S THE SCENE AT SAO PAULO FASHION WEEK ?
This season, I regrettably did not make it to Sao Paulo Fashion Week which took place last week. But my good friend Misha Janette, who’s an esteemed Tokyo based fashion journalist (The Japan Times) and stylist, did. En route from Sao Paulo to Tokyo, she had 20 minutes to kill at Zurich airport transfer zone. Thanks Misha for spending it on this roundup:
Fashion Highs:
Jesus Luz walking in a show and NO ONE cares. Seriously me and another journalist were google imaging him during the Ellus show because it was so quiet when he appeared we weren’t even sure it was him.
Cecilia Dean from Visionaire was at SP. ¨Whaaaaaa.¨
Great texture on the fabrics all week, from Osklen to Animale. Osklen was all cubism. Animale was…spiky. At Neon. Two words: TOUCAN DRESS
Bienniale building (the venue, ed.) decked out in tons of little graphics for their “language” theme. The most OBSCENE graphics ever (threesome, doggy style, stripper, puking into a garbage can, 69, etc.). Love them Brazilians.
Model news:
Vivi Orth was the breakout this season, I thought…she was in every show (basically). Lara Stone (Animale), Isabeli Fontana, Caroline Trentini (at Herchcovitch), Raquel Zimmerman, Alessandra Ambrosio, Cyntia Dixon were there. Low: Raquel Zimmerman press conference. A model needs a press conference? Alessandra Ambrosio is looking orange.
Club scene:
New club The Lions Den is all the rage. Doesn’t open until March but Ellus and Neon had their afterparties there
Off scene:
SP has the second largest fleet of helicopters in the world behind NY. I swear we had 10 people arrive to the Hotel Tivoli by helicopter while I was there.
How about the weather?
Weather SUCKS. period.

GOLDEN BOYS
the scene:backstage Ronaldo Fraga, Sao Paulo
What is it about those moustachoed latin golden boys which makes them so damn cool? They’re certainly men of many talents. When I asked these guys to take their pictures I did expect a good pose for sure, but not necessarily a dashing yoga pose. Incredible! Maybe something went lost in translation. Maybe they just like a good chuckle.

ENGLISH BREAKFAST, GISELLE & PARIS FASHION WEEK
Good morning, dear readers of THE TIMES newspaper, London:-) I hope my Sao Paulo pictures in today’s Saturday Magazine are not going to spoil your breakfast. Perhaps it even whets your appetite for more. Because more there is:
Gisele Bündchen, Madonna’s loverboy Jesus Luz, topmodel Raquel Zimmerman all feature in my Sao Paulo style watch report for Swiss fashion magazine Annabelle
Paris Fashion Week
I will for the very first time make it. Unlike Sao Paulo though, this is going to be an ‘all-exclusive’trip, more asphalt glitz than The Ritz, ha. All I have so far is a spare ticket from a friend for the Bernhard Willhelm show, which in the face of it, is a pretty brilliant start. The plan is to hang around outside the most important shows, waiting for the Carine Roitfelds to jump in front of my lens. But if you do, by any chance, have a spare Chanel invitation, five star hotel suite or suchlike, please let me know. I plan to be in Paris from March 5 – March 10/11.
PLAYLUST Gets A Facelift
Finally. The days of odd displays on certain Windows browsers, spam, and, well, rudimentary blogging, are almost over. Come spring and Playlust will look as fresh as a spring chicken.
I leave you with this week’s sharpest coat, spotted at Zurich University.

SKIPPER GIRL
the scene: Vila Madalena neighbourhood, Sao Paulo
Hello skipper girl. Hello simple, sunny, smiley, summer. What’s not to like about this Paulista shipping forecast? Please note, skipper girl has painted her nails orange. Quite possibly the only way to wear this season’s it-colour without looking too Guantanamo Bay. No, this is happy seventies orange, pure summer holiday joy. It immediately makes me think of and long for a sickly sweet ice-stick called ‘Rakete’ (rocket) which is very popular among children of all ages in Switzerland. I say: style ahoi!

THE FUNKY PHOTOGRAPHER
the scene: Sao Paulo
No, fashion show photographers don’t strictly rank high on anyone’s style list. The look gap, as it were, between models and photographers tends to be almost comically wide – the classic ‘beauty and the beast’ situation. But this is Brazil, a country where beauty is regarded as a human right and even the very poor get vouchers for free botox treatment. Little surprise then, this is the natural habitat for the rare species which I hereby declare as the model snapper.
I bumped into Barbara on several occasions. Backstage, in the street or on the dance floor – no matter where and when or behind and in front of the cam, she totally rocked. Yess, we can and should style Canon cams with tatoos, latex leggings and Melissa velvet flats. Please do try this at home.

GUTEN MORGEN SONNTAGSZEITUNG /HAPPY PLAYWATCHING
Happy PLAYWATCHING
I am v happy to announce I finally finally have my first style column: PLAYWATCH is like Baywatch for style hunters and will appear in the trend section of very prestigious Swiss Sunday paper SonntagsZeitung. We kick off with the animal print & white trash loving Vai! kids from Club Gloria – Sao Paulo’s answer to Boombox. PLAYWATCH will, every month or so, bring you the coolest looks from the hottest hot spots around the globe.
Guten Appetit.

DAYTIME VAI!

Following a night out at Clube Gloria, home to Sao Paulo’s wildest party animals, I wondered what the boys would look like in daylight. Rather Winnetou, it turned out.

NEON DRESS REHEARSAL
the scene: backstage Neon
The long awaited closing show of SPFW lived up to high expectations. The brilliant thing with Neon is their collections never vary much from season to season but each time the hipster label knows how to show-stop the catwalk. Again, it had all the signature elements: bold, geometric prints, bold and cheerful colours, plus a good measure of glitter and glam thrown in. After all, this season’s theme was: Party! Rather than turning the runway into disco like Amapo, Neon took us back to the heyday of haute couture, ca. 1953. Some might say it was more couture in spirit than all the couture shows in Paris the following week.
The real stars of course were the clothes themselves. I caught them backstage, moments before the models tried them on. I wonder what thoughts were were weaving through the outfits’ minds.
